This Week In Media 8/27/13

Wow are the movies opening this week bad. Unless you think I’m going to talk about the One Direction doc, an Ethan Hawke/Selena Gomez vehicle that wasn’t released to critics or an Eric Bana movie rated at 43/100 on IMDB then there won’t be any talk of new releases. However I don’t want to make that two straight weeks so I’ll mention a movie AP3 forgot to mention last week, The World’s End, among other things.

New This Week

Music:

Avenged Sevenfold - Hail to the King

It’s like they are trying to sound like Metallica… not that that’s a bad thing.

Video Games:

Lost Planet 3

This looks nearly decent but there’s almost no chance of my buying this. By the way the lead character looks like Adrien Brody.

Since I’ve Last Written

Movies:

The World’s End

I have not seen this film yet but I have high hopes and I am hearing good things. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were fantastic and I think this might be even better even as ridiculous as the plot may be. These guys are great together and great with director Edgar Wright. Their timing is perfect the tongue in cheek jokes are hilarious. I could watch 1,000 movies by these three.

The Island

This popped up on cable at some point and caught my eye. For whatever reason I got hooked. Honestly most of it is pretty solid. Watch it if you haven’t seen it before reading further. The first half was really fun the first time you see this. While weird the journey to finding out what these people are is really fun. That is unless they tell you that in the first 10-15 minutes, since I missed that. If they did then someone please tell the people that have already tuned out to skip the first 10-15 mins. There was plenty stupid going on without a doubt it is not a great movie by any means. For instance a moth shows Ewan Mcgregor the way out of the confines even though it would probably be happier in the dark musky room he found it in. Plus these clowns with an education of 15 year olds were able to escape roughly 200,000 men with guns, on the inside and the outside (both of which the men with guns are far more familiar with). It was fun though I actually enjoyed it.

Podcasts:

Adam Carolla Show

Carolla did what none other has before him. He raised well over a million dollars as a comedian for a crowd funded comedy to come out probably next year. Despite having a vacation planned he ended up doing a week long one on one podcast leading into the closing days of the Fund Anything campaign. The run of guests he had was great. Larry Miller, Kevin Hench, Jim Norton, Tom Lennon, Chris Hardwick and now since then Greg Fitzsimmons, Jay Glazer and Lisa Lampanelli. Just a tremendous run and I certainly have full faith into him turning that Fund Anything money into another gem of a film, at worst on par with The Hammer.

Doug Loves Movies

Just going along with the trio from The World’s End they popped on on August 21st for some Len Maltin Game and really killed. Lots of laughs here from them and obviously Doug Benson and I’m sure it will transition into their latest film.

Breaking Bad update:

As much as I want to see how this is going to play out I’m already devastated knowing that it’s almost over. Every Sunday ends with something crazy happening that makes me want to fast forward to next Sunday night. There are so many angles to consider between what the hell is going on. There is the obvious conclusion to Sunday’s episode with Jessie and Walt. Then there is Walt and Hank whom seem to be at odds but possible teammates moving forward. Then there are the flash forwards of Walt and his hair/scared neighbor. Then there is even Todd who seems to barely be in any of the episodes but enough so to make you think about what the hell his role will be moving forward. I feel like Walt may fake his own death but at the same time I can’t make any real predictions because literally anything can happen. There is just nothing predictable about the show and even with just five episodes left nothing would surprise me.
