NFL Pick'Em: Week 1, 2013
Week 1 is underway as we approach the first Sunday of the season. The US Open somehow trumps Week 1 of the NFL resulting in just two late afternoon games before we get an NFC East battle tomorrow night. There are some great games to be seen and some money to be won, so come check out our picks for this weekend and win some money with us.
* Home teams in bold.
AP3
Patriots -9.5
over Bills
The line has come down a bit since the Bills announced EJ Manuel as
the starter. I love it.
Titans +7 over Steelers
Solely making this pick because I chose the Steelers in my knockout
pool.
Saints -3 over Falcons
Sean Payton's first game back at home against a division rival. Why
isn't this game in Prime Time?
NY Jets +3 over Bucs
Upset Special!
I guess? Nobody believes in the Jets this year. So many critics and
Revis back in town get it shoved in their face when Rex Ryan starts
the year 1-0.
Chiefs -4 over Jaguars
Lock Alert!
Kansas City is everyone's pick to be a turnaround team this season.
If that's the case they need this one.
Bengals +3 over Bears
I don't like this Bears team at all. The heart of their defense is
gone, and their QB is a POS.
Dolphins PK over Browns
Stay Away!
Two more teams the people think have improved greatly over the off
season. I'm not buying it yet.
Panthers +3.5 over Seahawks
Cam Newton makes the leap this year. I don't like Pete
Carroll.
Lions -5 over Vikings
Look for minimal defense and lots of offense. At least from the
Lions anyway. I doubt Christian Ponder has improved over the off
season.
Colts -9 over Raiders
Because at this point there is no point amount high enough to make
me want to take the Raiders.
Cardinals +4.5 over Rams
I think that there is just too much offense in Arizona now for the
Rams to keep up. Carson Palmer can still sling it and Bruce Arians
proved that he can do it as a head coach in Indy last year.
49ers -4.5 over Packers
Stay Away!
Where to begin here? Do the niners suffer a Super Bowl hangover? Do
the Packers have a running game? Is Colin Kaepernick a legit
Quarterback? I don’t like anything about this pick.
Cowboys -3 over NY Giants
Dallas has yet to beat the Giants in the new Cowboys Stadium. Romo
has a huge game. Put it on the board.
Eagles +3.5 over Redskins
I hope I’m wrong here, but i just don’t think RG3’s knee has
healed. Chip Kelly will come out with his fast paced attack and
Washington won’t be able to respond in time.
Texans -4 over Chargers
I like to think of this year as the official end of Phillip Rivers.
No Norv Turner to “hold him back.” See ya in Cleveland next year
Phil.

MLZ
Patriots -9.5 over Bills
Are people
really taking the Bills seriously? Tom Brady and the Patriots
should roll in the opener against an injured rookie QB.
Steelers -7 over Titans
Provided Chris
Johnson doesn’t break a long run, I can’t see them even scoring
seven points against this Steelers defense, so naturally I think
Pittsburgh will cover.
Saints -3 over Falcons
This game
should not be at 1pm. The Superdome is going to be the loudest it
has been since the Saints return after Hurricane Katrina. This is a
big test for that defense right out of the gate, but Matt Ryan’s
deer in the headlights look will be seen while Drew Brees runs the
score up.
NY Jets +3 over Bucs
Upset special!
I have no faith in this Bucs team. They are not good. Of course the Jets aren’t either but this will be their lone bright spot on the year. And by lone bright spot I mean their only win.
Chiefs -4 over Jaguars
Lock Alert!
If this game
took place in Week 10 the Chiefs might be 13 point favorites.
Instead here we are in Week 1 with more value on this line than
perhaps any you will find all season. This Chiefs team is going to
be pretty good while the same can’t be said about the lowly
Jags.
Bears -3 over Bengals
These are both
teams that have garnished some sleeper status. I like the Bears to
breakout this year and not so much the Bengals, making this an easy
pick for me.
Browns PK over Dolphins
Yuck.
Seahawks -3.5 over Panthers
People are
really jumping on board this as an early upset special. While I
like that Panthers team to take a big step forward this year,
Seattle is just too good at too many things. Cam Newton always
starts the year slow and this year he will have an excuse to in the
form of the Seahawks defense.
Vikings +5 over Lions
The Lions suck.
Peterson might may outscore them by himself.
Colts -9 over Raiders
Lock Alert!
Nine points at
the start of a game can seem like a lot to lay but when this game
ends up Colts 31 Raiders 9 you’ll be kicking yourself for not
betting it.
Rams -4.5 over Cardinals
I really like
both of these clubs. The Cardinals just don’t have enough to hang
with the rest of the NFC West this year, while the Rams may have
what it takes to make a playoff push.
49ers -4.5 over Packers
This feels like
an awful lot of points. The 49ers are definitely the better team,
though you can never count out Aaron Rodgers. The defense of the
49ers should force Rodgers to his ass early and often enough to
make up for an offense that could struggle themselves.
Cowboys -3 over NY Giants
Is it required
that these two teams play on Sunday night of Week 1 every year? It
seems like they always play in Dallas and it seems like the Giants
always score 30+ points en route to a victory. However the Cowboys
usually pay them back later on in the year by winning in New York.
This year though the Cowboys are better. I think they surprise us
by getting a nice win late in the game to start the year off. At
the very least it will be a fun nightcap of Sunday
#1.
Redskins -3.5 over Eagles
The first of the Monday night doubleheader features another NFC East battle. The Eagles I think are doomed with Vick in that Chip Kelly offense nevermind all the other new pieces that need to figure out their roles. On the other hand the Redskins rely on the health of RG3. He will at the very least start this one and that should be enough to survive a new Eagles club.
Texans -4 over Chargers
I really don’t like this pick. I know it seems like a lock but I am not high on the Texans this year. Yet they are only laying four points to a terrible Chargers team. Yes they should be better by way of addition by subtraction of Norv Turner but Phil Rivers and the rest of their talent has lost a step too much to surprise us this year. They may need to just blow things up in San Diego.
