UFR... Bulletin Board Material

More often than not before a big game, some player or players will do something stupid to get the other team fired up. A lot of people say that it doesn’t make a difference. But as we saw at the Celtics “funeral” last night, it just very well might. Tonight I take a look at some other famous bulletin board material situations.

2002 AFC Championship Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers came in as heavy favorites against the New England Patriots. The Steelers had even gone as far to say that they made reservations for the Super Bowl. Most know the story, Brady goes down, and Bledsoe cleans up. Pats go on to the Super Bowl after a 24-17 victory in Pittsburgh. (And yes I did link the entire game… fuck you Pittsburgh)

1969 NBA Finals Celtics 108 Lakers 106

Before the game started, Laker's owner placed flyers in every seat stating "When, not if, the Lakers win the title, balloons will be released from the rafters, the USC marching band will play "Happy Days are Here Again” and broadcaster Chick Hearn will interview Elgin Baylor, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain in that order."

Well all that did was piss Bill Russell off. He looked at Jerry West before the game and said “Those fuckin balloons are staying up there.” Celtics come out and beat the Lakers to win the championship despite West being named Finals MVP.

The key to bulletin board material though, is to not tell people it is bulletin board material. Ala Arian Foster on Twitter this past season. Foster made his avatar on Twitter an article from the Boston Globe that talked trash about the Houston Texans. The Patriots beat the Texans in the divisional playoffs 41-28.

There are obviously a lot more cases in which bulletin board material was talked and mentioned by the media. For the most part they all end up backfiring. Isn’t that right J.R. Smith?
