Top 5 Most Versatile Actors
These guys can
get the job done whether the movie is rated G or rated R, whether
it’s a spoof comedy blockbuster, or it’s an Academy Award nominee.
Here we go in no particular order….
1. Jeff Daniels
Major Roles: Dumb and Dumber, The
Newsroom, Pleasantville, 101 Dalmatians
Major Awards: 4X Golden Globe Nominee
1X Emmy Nominee
Quickly before I get into Mr.
Daniels, his only Emmy nomination comes for the show The Newsroom.
He may win the Emmy (in my opinion he should) so it’s just a
nomination for now. For those that don’t watch it, The Newsroom is
the best drama on TV since Lost (that’s right I said it, MLZ). But
Daniels has also appeared in kids movies like101 Dalmatians, and
buddy comedies like Dumb and Dumber. His performance in
Pleasantville was highly underappreciated (mostly since many people
don’t even know what movie I’m talking about). But hands down
Daniels can do it all.
2. Paul
Giammatti
Major Roles: Sideways,
Cinderella Man, The Illusionist, John Adams, Big Momma’s House, Big
Fat Liar
Major Awards: 2 Golden Globe
Wins 1 Primetime Emmy Win 1 Oscar Nomination
Aside from John Adams,
Giammatti has always been the supporting actor. And he’s done it
phenomenally. His performance in Cinderella Man should have gotten
him an Oscar, if it was for Clooney getting his first award for
Syriana (no one saw that right?). Giammatti can play the goofy
sidekick or supportive manager. Usually a sidekick, Paul is
one of the best in the biz.
3. Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Major Roles: Patch Adams,
The Big Lebowski, Moneyball, Along Came Poll, Capote
Major Awards: Won an Oscar,
was nominated for 3 more
LET IT RAIN! That’s the
first thing that comes to mind when I think about PSH. His fat,
self-absorbed, loser, unathletic character in Along Came Polly.
Then there’s his roles as prick manager Art Howe in Money Ball, and
the prick doctor that wants to get Robin Williams expelled in Patch
Adams. I gotta be honest I didn’t see Capote, but if the man won an
Oscar for it, then it must be good.
4. Sean Penn
Major Roles: Mystic
River, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Milk, I am Sam
Major Awards: 2X Oscar
Winner, and another 3 Oscar nominations
Sure he went “full retard”
in I am Sam, and only got a nomination, but Sean Penn was great in
Mystic River and Milk, and that’s good enough to get him on this
versatile list. He went from he’s been special, gay, Spicoli, and
an ex-con. Mr. Penn has earned everything he’s gotten.
5. Leonardo DiCaprio
Major Roles: Titanic,
Django Unchained, Shutter Island, Inception, The Departed, Blood
Diamond, Catch Me if you Can, Growing Pains, What’s Eating
Gilbert Grape, J. Edgar
Major Awards: 3 Oscar
Nominations, 1 Golden Globe Win and 6 more Golden Globe
Nominations
In my opinion he’s the most
talented actor on the list. He’s been a slave owner, an informant,
a young immigrant kid who wins his way onto a giant ship, and
someone that can penetrate your dreams to implement his ideas. The
only bad thing about Leo is that he probably gets an Academy Award
for something he doesn’t deserve because the Academy realizes they
haven’t given him one yet.
