PGA Power Rankings 3/7/13

With daylight savings time on the horizon and with the temperatures seeming to creep up into the 40s on average now, golf isn't that far out. Even though it is currently showing and I will probably have to wake up extra early to shovel out my car before I go to work and shovel that place out. But Tiger has a share of the lead after the first round in the WGC Championship, and I'm starting to get antsy. I need to get out on the links.

Where does Tiger rank?

1. Brandt Snedeker

This guy is just a machine. He tops the money leaders and FedEx Cup points. He has only played in five events but has won once and finished in the top 10 three other times. The fifth round he placed 23rd, meaning he hasn't missed a cut yet.

2. Matt Kuchar

Another machine. Dominated the match play tournament, knocking off the next guy on this list in the final. Mahan hadn't even trailed in a match play event for over a year at that point yet Kuchar knocked him off on 18. He's #2 in the FedEx Cup points and on the money board. Kuch is playing such exceptional golf it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see him wearing a green jacket in just about a months time.

3. Hunter Mahan

Six for six cuts made. Runner up in the match play championship. Only but one other top 10 on the year for Mahan but that's good enough for third in points and just under $2M. Also he is probably the most random/funniest part of the Golf Boys rap group. Also he posted a 67 today, good for one back of the lead.

4. Tiger Woods

Speaking of the lead. Tiger shot low today with a 66. That puts him in a five way tie with Jacobsen, McDowell, Garcia, and Watson. Annually he has a piss poor performance in the match play tourney so I am throwing that out the window. That puts him one out of two on the PGA Tour. He struggled a bit at the Honda Classic (still made the cut) but he won the Farmers Insurance Open. Now here he is playing well again. I'm very excited to watch him this weekend, to see if he can find that killer instinct once again.

5. Phil Mickelson

Phil edges Howell because he has a win on the year. Howell has more top 10's but has also played in more events. Phil is obviously a threat to win every time he hits the course. He hit a drive today that went about 300 yards in the air came down landed on the cart path and went about another 150 yards. Luck sure, but three bills in the air is rather impressive and he can forever say he hit a drive 450 yards en route to a -5 scoring putting him just one back of Tiger and company.
